How many psychologists does it take to change a light bulb?

April 11 2007
Ok, so what does a corny joke have to do with a life lesson?

First of all ... in case you don't already know, the punch line is:
"None! ... It has to want to change."
This strangely enough is a mantra I repeat to myself on a regular basis.

We are in constant need of getting people to change. Particularly if we find ourselves working as managers or sales people. The first question that comes to mind when we need people to change is:
"How can I make this person change?"
But that is probably the wrong question. The right question is:
"How can I make this person want to change?"
In the short run using force, like a gun to a bank teller's head, makes people do what we want. However in the long run, making people really want to do what we need them to do, will make our life easier, and leave us with more time and energy to go on making other more important changes to our world.

Whenever possible ... find ways of changing what people want to do, rather than simply what they do.
