What is that the people with the guns dont' get. Weapons will never defeat ideas, unless those guns are used to obliterate every last human being who holds onto those ideas. And even then, the cost to the gun bearer would be intolerable.
My friends point out that words could not have defeated Hitler and that the Second World War was an unavoidable use of force. Perhaps ... but perhaps not as well ... What a powerful tool we put into Hitler's hands when the Treaty of Versailles was used to punish the German people for the events of World War I. And that treaty was composed of what? ... words of course.
Humanity is facing immense problems. Problems that require cooperation and a combined will to solve; and all we seem to be able to focus on is trying to kill each other with guns and bombs.
Perhaps Barrak Obama will prevail, perhaps he, like Martin Luther King, John F. Kennedy and too few others will be able to use the power of language to make real, and not just momentary, changes to the course of human destiny. We can only hope.
