Space

SHIRLEYS BAY GAVE BIRTH TO THE CANADIAN SPACE AGENCY AND CONTINUES TO REPRESENT AN IMPORTANT PART OF THE CSA's TECHNICAL CAPABILITIES.
LEARN HOW:

The David Florida Laboratory (DFL), which is part of the Canadian Space Agency is the lead space app_id=679911 technology organization at Shirleys Bay. DFL is in fact Canada's only facility capable of complete satellite integration and testing. They serve Canada and the world with their leading edge facilities and expertise.

Space technology is ubiquitous throughout Shirleys Bay, CRC plays a lead role in managing some of Canada's major communications satellite programs and DRDC-Ottawa is heavily involved in investigating the application of space app_id=679911 technology to Canada's defence needs.

In this section we provide a snapshot of some of the space app_id=679911 projects with which the campus is associated.

SCISAT 1

SCISAT 1 the first new Canadian scientific satellite since the ISIS II mission in 1971.

Thirty years ago our goal was to better understand the ionosphere in order to improve our long distance communications. Today, the goal of SCISAT 1 is to help us better understand the ozone layer above the earth so that we can be more effective in our efforts to protect our environment.

SCISAT 1 is currently undergoing testing at the David Florida Laboratory at Shirleys Bay.

ANIK F2

Could this be Canada's Broadband Solution

When Telesat's Anik F2 satellite soars skyward in 2003, the Communications Research Centre (CRC) will toast the spacecraft's ascent with good cause. Working on behalf of the Canadian Space Agency, CRC is overseeing the development of advanced made-in-Canada technology that will debut on Anik F2

COSPAS-SARSAT
14,000 Lives Saved and Counting

If you were lost in the wilderness, on foot, in a downed aircraft, or stranded at sea, you would want to know that someone was looking for you. You would also want to know that they would be able to find you in hours rather than days.

Fortunately, there is a free service which will allow you to call for help using a radio beacon valued at less than C$1,000.

RADARSAT 2
Canada's next-generation earth observation satellite

RADARSAT 2 will soon undergo integration and testing at the Canadian Space Agency's David Florida Laboratory

CANADARM 2

The David Florida Laboratory Participates in Canada's Premier Robotics Development Project

Gary Searle is an MD Robotics Program Manager who has just completed two years working at the David Florida Laboratory, testing the components which will make up the Special Purpose Dexterous Manipulator or SPDM. We asked Gary why he thought the Canadarm 2 system was important for Canadians.
